South Dakota Knights of Columbus Foundation, Inc.
The Officers of the SD Knights of Columbus formed the foundation to establish a fund that eventually will donate funds directly to various charitable areas designated by the State Council. This was done so that SD State Council funds can be used for other charitable purposes. The only funds that can be used from the Foundation are the interest that is earned from the principal of the South Dakota Knights of Columbus Foundation, Inc.
To simplify how to donate to the SD K of C Foundations, Inc., it can be explained this way. The foundation gains funds several ways:
1. Individual(s), families, councils, or assembly may donate to support SD Knights of Columbus Activities.
2. Donations are made directly to the foundation and are tax deductible. Some of those reasons can be:
A. Wanting to promote SD K of C activities
B. Wanting to donate to honor the name of an individual or family for a special event (holiday-birthday-birth of a child- wedding anniversary-memorial )
3. Individuals may include the SD K of C Foundation in the form of a bequest. This bequest maybe in the form of a monetary donation or property bequest. It is entirely up to the individual.
Articles of Incorporation:
The purpose for which the corporation is organized as follows:
To operate for religious, charitable or educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 (or the corresponding provisions of any future United States Internal Revenue Law). In furtherance of these purposes, the corporation shall operate to support Catholic education for children and adults, to support the needs of people with intellectual disabilities, and to support such other religious, charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the 1954 (or the corresponding provisions of any future United States Internal Revenue Law) as may from time to time be identified by the Board of Directors.
The basic idea for the SD K of C Foundation, Inc. came from Minnesota and North Dakota Knights of Columbus organizations. It has taken Minnesota & North Dakota several decades to establish their funds to the point where the Foundation is donating money to their state councils.
One of the biggest fundraisers for the SD K of C Foundation, Inc. is the annual Silent Auction at the SD K of C State Convention. One half of the profits from the auction have been donated to the foundation.
All donations directly to the foundation are tax deductible because the foundation is a 501(c)(3).
It has been suggested the possibility of each council and/or assembly could do one fundraiser a year to support South Dakota K of C Foundation, Inc.
